The first Tradition being unlocked shouldn't matter, but having enough Unity definitely does. 3 Unity Beta is truly kind dreadful. (And with more unity you can reduce that to 16% quicker and with less opportunity costs). It's silly that all empires eventually pick the same traditions outside small list of minor deviations. If you hover over it it will tell you how much unity you can use to "ascend" the planet, which increases the value of that specialization.
